🚢 Skagway Port Day Guide

Most ships are tied up in Skagway from around 7 AM to 8 PM — one of the longest port days you'll get anywhere in Alaska. All-aboard is usually 30 minutes before sailing, so glance at your ship's daily program the moment you wake up and set an alarm for it.

Most shore excursions — the train, the float trips, the hikes — only run half a day. That means nearly everyone ends up with several free hours downtown and no real plan for them. That's what this guide is for.

Docked far out and don't feel like walking? The SMART shuttle runs downtown for $3 per ride, $5 all-day pass — an easy option if your ship berths at the far end of the Railroad Dock.

Wherever you start, we're at 3rd & State Street — one of the very first intersections you reach walking into town, closer than most of the Broadway tourist strip. You'll pass us well before you hit the shops everyone else is standing in line for.

The depot is about two blocks from the Wagon, so it's an easy add-on to your train excursion no matter which ride you booked.

• • Riding the morning train? Grab lunch right after you step off the platform, before the midday rush hits downtown.
• • Riding in the afternoon? Eat at 11 AM when we open and beat the rush before you walk over to board.

• • Service time: 5-10 minutes, order to food in hand.
• • Where to eat it: our outdoor picnic tables with a mountain view, or grab-and-go if you're walking straight to your next thing.
• • Realistic total stop: 20-30 minutes, door to door.

Compare that to a sit-down restaurant downtown in peak season, where seating is first-come, first-served and a table can eat 45 minutes to an hour of a port day you don't get back. When your time onshore is the whole point of the day, a fast, good lunch is worth more than a fancy one.

A hot dog is the universal kid lunch, and it travels well between excursions. Our all-beef hot dog is $10, and meal deals with chips and a drink run $17-$19 — easy to order for a family without doing menu math on the fly.

Kids also love our two dachshund mascots, DJ and Spike, who hang around the stand and make the stop feel like part of the day instead of just a food break.

We're one block off Broadway in Skagway's Gold Rush historic district, surrounded by the same false-front buildings prospectors walked past on their way to the Klondike in 1898.
